Electives Evening

Are you a returning third year who is going to have to come up with an elective for this year? Are you a fourth year who is going on one and wants a few tips? Or are you a first or second year who wonders what electives are all about? Well, this coming weekend, all your questions will be answered!

This Saturday (the 15th May), CMF is hosting an Electives Night starting at 7.00pm, where between courses of the amazing dinner that's always provided, we'll hear from a few folks who have been away on their electives recently, what they got up to and some do's and dont's.

It's being hosted by the Green's (who live out near Cults) so if you'd like to come and need transport please drop me an email at erlove88@googlemail.com and we'll arrange something. Also, if you'd like to come and have a car, please let me know how many spaces you might have available. The event is open to all, whether members of CMF, Christians or not and promises to be a really good evening so it would be awesome if you could come.

Also, CMF is having a bake-sale this Friday from 11-2 in the Suttie Centre Foyer so please come along with your pennies and good appetites!

Public meeting on the implications of the 'End of Life Assistance Bill' for our society

Hi all,

On Wednesday 5th May at 7.00pm at the Citadel, Castlegate, Aberdeen there's a public meeting on the implications of the end of life bill for doctors and society were it to be put in place. There will be several presentations - from doctors currently working in Palliative care among others- and this will be followed by a question and answer session with tea and coffee afterwards.

For all those interested in the possible shape of our healthcare and society in the future, this evening could be of considerable interest and it would be great if you were to come along. It would be great to see you there.

PS> we are also looking for two more people to help as ushers, so if you feel you have the time to spare, please drop me a line on erlove88@googlemail.com thank you!

Tea, cake, and the End of Life (Scotland) bill - Saturday, 1st May

Hello all!

Some of you may be aware that an ‘End of Life’ Bill has been introduced at the Scottish parliament proposing legalisation of physician assisted suicide, that is, allowing doctors to prescribe drugs to cause the immediate death of those requesting it.

You may also have heard that the Scottish Parliament has authorised the formation of an ad-hoc committee to consider the general principles of the bill. The committee is currently holding a public consultation on the bill, and it is accepting written evidence and opinions from members of the public up until the 12th of May 2010.

Whatever your opinion regarding physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia and end of life care, it is impossible to deny that there are huge ethical and moral issues surrounding this bill. Some concerns that have been raised by health professionals and members of the public are detailed in the attached word document.

As medical students and future doctors, this bill has the potential to affect our future practice of Medicine, and we have a moral obligation (perhaps even more so than that of the public) to be aware of and take an interest in the drafting of this piece of legislation – so that at the end of the day, what does pass into written law will be something that we can live with.

Bearing this in mind, we will be holding a “writing in” session this coming Saturday (1st May 2010) at 3.00pm where folk can come round to 86 Shaw Crescent and, over tea and cake (always helps procedures!) get more information about the Bill, discuss it and, most importantly, focus on writing a paragraph or two to our MSPs or a submission to the committee to let them know our thoughts/concerns.

Everyone is very welcome- whatever you think about the Bill: we welcome discussion! Hope to see you there,

CMF xxx

Bible study

Hey all,

Bible study, one of those things I'm sure we all agree is useful and necessary in our Christian lives: sharing the word with each other, learning to know God and "training [ourselves] in godliness" 1Tim5 vs8. But how many of us have managed to settle into a bible study group? How many of us are always too busy, just haven't found the opportunity or haven't managed to get involved in one at our own church?

Well, there's a bunch of us medical students (and a physics student!) that meet together, usually on a Saturday afternoon to study the word together and we'd love it if anyone would like to join us :) We share and discuss and support each other through the tough times that invariably come with being a medical student, and we all know how hard that can sometimes be.

If you are interested in joining or finding out more about it, please just drop me an email at erlove88@googlemail.com. You would be very welcome and, indeed an encouragement to us- "when we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith , but i also want to be encouraged by yours" Rom1 vs12. So please join us, we would love it.

Dundee Day!

On the 20th of March...wait for it.... there's going to be a CMF day conference in Dundee- whoop whoop! It's called "When Medicine hits the Road" and is for Doctors and Medical Students alike.

It is set to be an awesome day with a fantastic programme covering topical issues and providing a great opportunity to meet and share with other Christians. The morning session will be about what we might end up facing and how to handle things if Margo MacDonald's 'End of Life Bill' becomes legal (which might happen) with a choice of seminars in the afternoon. It's a bargain at £5 and it was a great success last year, There are plenty of places still available – don’t miss out!

The main event is on the Saturday (9.30-4.30) (yes we know that's early!) but there' s going to be some Student stuff (meal and some light entertainment) on in the Friday evening with accommodation provided by Dundee students for those travelling (ie us!). Especially cool since that means more banter AND we don't have to get up at a daft hour to get down there in time.

So...... I thought that we should get a group together and go down on the Friday night for some banter and to get to know some folk from other Med schools, travelling back up on the Saturday evening. This could really work! Cause let's face it, Dundee's not THAT far away really! And we're pretty bad at staying aloof up in the north and not joining in with the rest of the Scottish medics, so whad d'you say?

If you're at all interested then just drop me a line at erlove88@googlemail.com and we'll organise transport depending on how many cars we have/ folk are interested etc. It could be a weekend of muchus fun and learning so hope to hear from you :)

Love,

A very enthusiastic Rep xxx

Student-Doctor meal, 15th February

Next Monday (15th) we're having the first CMF student/ doctor meal of the term and, as it's the day after chinese new year (Valentine's day is going by the wayside I'm afraid!), we're having a chinese theme. It's going to be at the usual time and place (7.30pm at No.5 High street) and we thought this would be an awesome opportunity to reach out to the malaysian/chinese/singaporean students in our medschool.

As you probably know, Chinese New Year is a big festival in the East and many may be celebrating it away from home for the first time (esp first years and new fourth years) so, to be extra welcoming it would be awesome if everyone could invite a malaysian/chinese/singaporean classmate along as well to get to know them better and enjoy some chinese food :).

This coming year is the year of the Rabbit Tiger, so if you want to wear something vaguely rabbit tiger themed as well then I'm sure there'll be extra pudding for you or something :). And it'll be a great chance to chill after all those exams (2nd years!).

This could be a lot of fun, so please come along and be prepared to enjoy yourselves :) Hope to see you there!

End of Life Bill (Scotland)

On the 20th January Margo MacDonald published her bill hoping to legalise Physician Assisted Suicide. If this bill goes through, it could have profound effects on the way we practise medicine here in Scotland. We hope that this will not happen and believe all human life to be precious in His sight, each person being a valuable member of society.

If you would like to make your views known, then please follow the link to 'About the End of Life Bill' to learn a bit more about it (warning: large document!) and then write to your MP. You can easily find out who your MP is and quickly write just a couple of lines detailing your concerns by following the link to 'Write to Them' and it really is so simple you only need 5 mins. Please help us to speak up for those who would be put at risk by this bill, for those who cannot speak up for themselves.

Sharing your Faith with Patients (1st Feb)

Hey Everybody!

Hands up all who have ever found sharing your faith difficult at one time or another- yep mine's in the air too. Add that the person you want to share with is your patient to the mix, and things get just that bit more complicated.........

So, we've organised a session on sharing your faith with patients, what the GMC says about it (and how NOT to do it!), a biblical view and some personal stories from an Aberdeen GP, Dr Peter Kiehlmann. It promises to be an extremely interesting evening and touches the core of what it means to be both a Christian and a Medic, I can't recommend it enough!

It's being held at the Med Chi building at Foresterhill on the 1st Feb (Monday) and everyone who wants to is welcome to come from all years and student/non-student alike! There will be food and nibbles from around 5.30pm with the talk hoping to start around 6.00pm. It would be great to see folk there and, especially if you're thinking of coming for the first time, drag some other folk along with you!

Anyway, I'll see you on the 1st, make sure you keep the date free :)

Welcome to CMF Grampian!

Welcome to CMF Grampian!

About CMF: Christian Medical Fellowship (CMF) is an interdenominational organization aimed at helping Christian doctors and medical students integrate all aspects of their medical career with their faith. CMF has over 4000 doctors and 1000 medical students, and has active groups in 38 out of the 40 medical schools in the UK.
Regular journals are produced for students and graduates alike (Nucleus and Triple Helix) from the central office in London. CMF takes a keen interest in ethical issues, and regularly makes submissions to government consultations on upcoming law changes. We also partner with other Christian medical associations in many countries through the ICMDA (International Christian Medical and Dental Association).

More about CMF UK

CMF Grampian: We are a group of Christian doctors and medical students in who live, work and/or study in Aberdeen. The students group meets fortnightly on Mondays for a meal and banter, usually followed by a talk or discussion. These discussions may focus on issues relating to faith and Medicine, and being a Christian in the NHS; or may involve ethical discussions or debates. Once a month, there is a Student-Doctor meal held at our University Secretary's home - delicious food, great company and lots of fun!

We also organise Freshers' events every year - we traditionally have a booth at the Regents' Evening (the Medical School's version of the Freshers' Fayre), and there is an annual Freshers' Barbeque held during Freshers' week each year.

Graduation is the other major milestone of student life, and we hold graduation events every year to send off the 5th years who are soon to become newly-minted doctors. It's a great opportunity to say goodbye, cement old friendships, and meet doctors from the local area, who might soon become your colleagues.

There are also a variety of other events and conferences during the year, some held within Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire, and some further afield. If you are interested and would like to know more, feel free to email us at cmfaberdeen@gmail.com.
